How to Snag a Picture from the Internet

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a Marketing Matter that showed a screenshot of what www.SchoolAdvancement.com may look like in the near future.  I received some emails wondering what program I used to grab that photo from the my Internet browser.  When I told them "Microsoft WORD," they wondered how I did it, so I thought I'd share.

You can take a "screenshot" of your computer's display by holding the "Control" key and pressing the "PrtSc" key.  Then, open a Microsoft WORD document, right click on the page, and choose "Paste."  The screenshot will appear on your WORD document.  While the picture is embedded in the document, what folks want to do is convert it to a .jpg file, which is why they use programs like Snagit.  But rather than go through that, try this.

Once your screenshot is on your Word Document, save the document as a Web page to your Desktop.  Simply choose "Save As," and when the Dialog Box pops up, select "Desktop" as your destination, name the file something you'll remember in the "File name" field, but then in the bar below that, called "Save as type," choose "Web Page (*.htm, *.html)" and then click "Save."

On your Desktop, two items will appear: a file and a folder, both with the same name.  The folder contains all the items that are a part of the Web page you just created.  Open that folder, and inside you will find a .jpg file of the screenshot you pasted to your WORD document.   Click and drag that file to an area on your Desktop, and then you can delete the file and folder that with the same name that you just created.

You can now use the photo as you would any other .jpg picture (crop it, resize it, etc.)
